A Note from Andrea

Dear Reader,

My apologies to you for having gone silent these past three months. It wasn’t planned, but Fearless Andrea went into introspective mode in order to come out refreshed and ready to serve to my greatest ability. Know that I value your attention and support, and I will do everything in my power to make time you invest with me valuable and rewarding.

I was also on a whirlwind travel tour. Since mid-September, I’ve attended professional development and coaching events in Baltimore, MD; Corte Madera, CA; Tempe, AZ; Victoria, British Columbia; and North Beach, CA. I’ve also visited with friends in Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and Washington.

This past week, my husband Roger and I took his mother on a short holiday cruise to Key West and Cozumel, Mexico. This picture is of us enjoying our favorite restaurant in Cozumel, La Chosa. Visit My Life Mosaic blog to see more pictures and read about our adventures.

Too many planes, but just the right number and mix of colleagues & business partners, and friends & family. It has been a great year of reconnection for me. I must admit that despite the many new things I began this year, I was in hiding until early fall 2007. The hibernation was important as I refined exactly what it is that my clients and our growing community of Fearless, Fabulous Females want and need. Now it is time to get back into action.

I'm recharged and ready for a dynamic and rewarding 2008. You will see some major changes in my online presence, including new programs, resources, and opportunities for coaching so you can get your life launched!

It’s good to be back.

With support & enthusiasm,

10 Enemies of Women over 45

Women’s Voices for Change is a blog I recently discovered. It offers an interesting mix of commentary on health, politics and culture, especially as these issues relate to female boomers. The blog's motto is: “It isn't about older. It's about better. And it's about time we started making some noise.” I like that.

The entry about the 10 Enemies of Women Over 45 is a reminder of of ways we can protect ourselves from false expectations and unrealistic ideas of what it means to be a woman in the 21st century.

Explore the site. There are some great columnisits. And add your own thoughts and experience. Sitting quietly on the sidelines is not the way to live life.

Feature

Navel Gazing 101: Look Down & In, Then Look Up & Out

It is easy to believe that things are the same from year to year. At this time of the year—when we are reconnected with our families of origin—we are often immersed in longstanding holiday traditions that seemingly make time stand still. But the truth is that everything around us is constantly changing.

Women of our generation were taught not to get too big for our britches. We were told it was important to be thoughtful of the feelings and respond to the needs of others ahead of our own even, as we were encouraged to have it all.

Now popular culture has tipped the other way. From magazines to reality television shows to public policy, we are experiencing a frenzy of focused and often excessive self-actualization above all other values. However, women at midlife aren't too likey to tip excessively toward self-absorption. We can afford a bit of introspection.

Check in with how you feel about how you’ve lived your life thus far. Give yourself the gift of a weekend, day, or even a long afternoon to ponder, in isolation, what you want your life to be about as you sail into the new year.

Have you been learning and making adjustments to keep up with what is new? Are you in tune with the latest incarnation of your dreams and goals? Are you honoring your unique abilities and and using them to make a contribution? Are you enjoying your life?

Notice ideas or plans that no longer serve you, physical items to donote or discard to make space for new projects, and tasks that could be better accomplished by others or in more efficient ways. I’m not suggesting that you tell everyone to fend for themselves or stop the rewarding activities that engage your creativity and intellect. But do consider what you can add (activities or passions) or subtract (responsibilities or busy work) to enable you to spend the most time and effort on what matters most to you?

All of your experiences and acquired expertise have perfectly positioned you to make the most of the what is ahead. You are so much smarter, capable, and wiser than before. With half a life yet to live, where and how can you make your greatest contribution?

Keep in mind your most cherished dreams of the future. And begin to make them real now.
